Spiel of the day

On this date in 1990, South African president F.W. de Klerk ended a 30-year ban on the African National Congress and promised to free ANC leader Nelson Mandela, who had been in prison since 1964. In 1993, de Klerk and Mandela shared the Nobel Peace Prize. The following year, Mandela was elected president of South Africa in the country's first all-race election; he served for five years (1994-1999). Quote: "After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb... I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom comes responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended." – Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela.
